The secondary level examination holds equivalence to the 10th board examinations conducted by well-known boards like ICSE, CBSE, and other national or state standard boards. Similarly, the Higher Secondary level examination conducted by the NIOS Board is on par with other 12th board examinations.

The NIOS Board holds the distinction of being the largest open school globally, with approximately 2.81 million students enrolled at different levels of education. It boasts a vast network comprising 5 departments, one sub-regional center, 20 regional centers, over 7200 study centers within India, and around 1800 centers both in India and abroad. Following are the syllabus of NIOS Board :-
1.OBE (Open Basic Education):-
Open Basic Education, which stands for Open Basic Education, is an initiative introduced by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) to offer fundamental education to learners. This program aims to provide a basic education that is on par with regular formal schools. The curriculum for OBE is structured in three levels, each equivalent to a specific class in traditional schooling.
The ‘A’ level course in OBE is comparable to the curriculum taught in the third grade of regular schools.
The ‘B’ level curriculum in OBE corresponds to the syllabus taught in the fifth grade of traditional schooling.
The ‘C’ level syllabus in OBE is equivalent to the curriculum taught in the eighth grade of regular schools.
These levels within the OBE program are designed to provide learners with a comprehensive education that covers the fundamental knowledge and skills appropriate for each grade level.
2.Secondary Courses:-
The Secondary Courses offered by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are equivalent to Class X education. Students who have successfully completed Class VIII are eligible to enroll in the secondary level course. In this course, students are required to choose a minimum of five main subjects in addition to two language subjects. The curriculum is designed to cover various disciplines and provide students with a well-rounded education. 3.Senior Secondary Course :-

Students are required to choose a minimum of five main subjects along with two language subjects. 4.Vocational Education Courses :-
The NIOS board provides a wide range of vocational education courses in addition to their basic and secondary education programs. These vocational courses aim to equip students with specialized skills in various sectors such as agriculture and animal husbandry, business and commerce, IT and technology, engineering and architecture, health and paramedical science, home science, hospitality, management programs, teacher training, and more. With over a hundred vocational courses available, students can choose based on their interests and career aspirations.
5.Life Enhancement Programme :-
NIOS offers additional courses to enrich its students in various domains. The courses offered by NIOS include Women Empowerment, Yoga, Indian Music, and Enrichment of Knowledge. These courses aim to provide students with valuable skills, knowledge, and experiences in areas that contribute to their personal growth, well-being, and cultural enrichment. 6.For ITI students:-
Students who want to advance in the IT and Technology sector can apply for the online ITI Learner Program conducted by NIOS. It is a 2-year regular course offered to students under the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS). Students choose to take at least five subjects. 3 subjects will be computer-based subjects, one will be a language subject and another subject can be chosen from other core subjects offered by NIOS.
7.Under the Nepia Project:-
NIOS also offers courses under the NEPIA scheme. It is a joint educational project for the Indian Army (NEPIA) and NIOS to provide human resource quotient to Indian Army soldiers with various educational qualifications.
NIOS Board Subject Detail:-
In the NIOS Board, if a student passes in five subjects, they are awarded a pass degree. However, students have the option to appear for the exam in a maximum of seven subjects. The NIOS Board offers a diverse range of subjects, allowing students to choose according to their own preferences and capabilities. Students can also change subjects during the course if they wish to do so. Additionally, students have the flexibility to choose up to three languages as part of their subject selection.
Registration with Nios Board:-
Students who meet the minimum age requirement can register for NIOS secondary or higher secondary courses during July and August each year, with specific dates mentioned on the website. To register for the secondary course, students must have successfully completed at least Class 8 education in a regular school. However, the NIOS Board may, at its discretion, allow candidates to self-certify their fulfillment of this criterion without requiring additional certification.
For the higher secondary course, students can register only if they have successfully completed their secondary education from a recognized board, including the NIOS Secondary Board.
There are over 2000 affiliated institutes across major towns and cities in the country, listed in the NIOS prospectus and website. Students can register at these institutes and receive specialized instruction or choose to study from the provided textbooks at their own pace from the comfort of their homes. Attendance is not compulsory, and registration and course costs are affordable, ensuring accessibility for all sections of society. Instruction is also available through audio and video cassettes, compact discs, radio broadcasts, and television broadcasts.
NIOS ODE (On-Demand Examination):-
The National Institute of Open Schooling also has a system of On-Demand Examination (ODES). In which candidates can take the exam when they are ready for it. Candidates have to choose the program themselves to take the exam.
This system was first introduced in the year 2003 at the secondary level and proved to be a major step towards flexibility and distance learning. This system of nios board made the total system of examination independent from the time limit.
Seeing the success at the secondary level, this system was introduced in the year 2007 at the senior secondary level. Presently, National Institute of Open Schooling conducts On-Demand Examination (ODES) at NIOS Headquarters-Noida and its Regional Centers and some Kendriya Vidyalayas.
Examination in a year:-
The examinations are conducted twice a year: in April-May and October-November. Students are allowed a maximum of nine opportunities in five years to complete their exams; They can appear for as many or as many subjects as they want at a time. Students who do not complete the exam in all of their chosen subjects within the specified period may re-apply and transfer their exam credits.
Most of the questions in theory paper require short answers or answers in marks. Practical exam is conducted in subjects like Science, Geography, Word Processing, Home Science and Painting. Examiners are liberal in their standards, acknowledging the special needs of the students taking the test. Students have to obtain at least 33 percent marks to pass an exam.
NIOS also provides on-demand examination system. Thus, a student who completes his/her preparation in one of his/her chosen subjects can visit the NIOS center and ask for immediate examination in that subject. A question paper will be prepared and checked from a question bank. This system has several benefits: the student can attend when he is ready; There is less pressure on the student; And if the student wants to improve his performance then he is allowed to appear as many times as he wants. Presently, however, the on-demand examination system is available only for certain subjects, and is available only at the NIOS Headquarters in Noida. The system is expected to be expanded soon to include more disciplines and other centers across the country.
